Guitar Boy Superstar 1970-76
A huge star in Nigeria, Victor Uwaifo is little known on these shores. This fantastic anthology should put this right. Uwaifo was the first African musician to achieve a gold disc in 1969 with the album Joromi. His music reveals a new facet of an incandescant music scene – 1970s Nigeria – in full flow. Uwaifo mixed the traditional rhythms of his home town, Benin City, with the soul, rock and highlife he heard in Lagos. The results are stunning, lit up by Uwaifo’s glittering psychedelic guitar. The tracks, sound quality, sleevenotes and photos here are all phenomenal.
